A nigger stole my bike

A nigger stole my bike  is the touching third novel from Felipe Müller (Chile, 1951) . It revolves around Charlie, a foster boy living inside of the worst part of Detroit Metropolitan area. He is an endearing and naive outsider, who scratches out a meager existence for himself by stealing, while struggling with the suicide of his girlfriend, family tensions, exploring his sexuality, experimenting with drugs, and his own mental illness.

A Nigger stole my bike

The story comprises 13 hours of a Sunday in the life of Charlie. An empty apartment, and old film, a towel, porn magazines, 73 dollars and a meth delivery. The cable company, Jesus, the old neighbor, Anna, a part-time drug dealer , two blocks, the first World Series game, a very special cupcake and the worst song ever, all combine to bring Charlie to its limits, and reveal issues such as the loneliness, the confusion between friendship and business, as well as frustration in adult life.

Full of the Müller’s darkly funny style, “A Nigger stole my bike” is a book  that shows that, in spite our ourselves, sometimes we can see the light.
